Spontaneous combustion of coal is a hazard that is likely to occur during coal mining, storage, transport, and utilisation under favourable circumstances. Shendong coalfield, located in the Inner Mongolian region, is the largest coalfield and the most important energy supplier in China. Due to a variety of geological and operational reasons, spontaneous combustion has occurred in several operations and become a major threat to mining operations and coal reserve recovery in Shendong coal mines. This monograph summarises years’ research outcome of the team, which is presented with several chapters. These chapters include a critical investigation of situation of this hazard in Shendong coal mines, a set of experimental tests to gain deep insights into propensity of Shendong coals to spontaneous combustion, CFD modelling on heating evolution with and without considering air leakage from the mining induced cracks and associated inertisation plans, and a sophisticated ventilation simulation model with a whole network of a coal mine to propose several solutions to reduce pressure differential between longwall face and surface. The book should be in interest of practitioners engaged in coal industry and related research regimes.
