畅想英语 节选

《畅想英语》: To gardeners, spring is the season to plow, furrow, sow, fertilize, cultivate, prune, trim, and water their plants under an optimum weather and sunlight conditions. Beside everything mentioned above, they make use of the benefits of four seasons to help them optimize growth. The analogy of gardening always associates my imagination with the vivid pictures of "nurture" and "nature" in education. Education accompanies us from our infancy all the way through the elderly years. The level of our propensity and the growth of our learnings depend on the relationship between our inbom gifts and education after birth. We all are born with different talents and aptitudes such as musical talent or mathematical genius. We could tell the differences from the dichotomy of our personalities such as introversion versus extraversion, intuition versus sensing, feeling versus thinking, and judging versus perceiving. For example, introverts are energized by spending quiet time alone or with a small group. They tend to be more reserved and thoughtful, while extraverts are energized by spending time with people. In busy, active surroundings, they tend to be more expressive and outspoken. The intuitive focus on a more abstract level of thinking shows they are more interested in theories, patterns, and explanations. They are often more concerned with the future than the present and are often described as "creative". Sensors focus on their five senses and are interested in information they can directly see, hear, feel, and so on. They tend to be hands-on learners and are often described as "practical". Feelers tend to make decisions with their hearts; they are interested in how a decision will affect people, and whether it fits in with their values. In contrast, thinkers tend to make decisions with their heads; they are interested in finding the most logical and reasonable choice. Judgers appreciate structure and order; they like things planned, and dislike last-minute changes. Perceivers appreciate flexibility and spontaneity; they like to leave things open, so they can change their minds. If the type of personality is matched with an acquired learning, the appropriate combination will pave a solid foundation for a person's career. That is why we can find out that those people who not only possess the expertise at a certain field, but also demonstrate their enthusiasm for that field. For example, we see this in medical doctors, lawyers, teachers, chefs, engineers, accountants, and in all walks of life. Have you ever thought of the important role of nurture related to how gardeners cultivate their plants? Both nature and nurture are indispensable to the growth of our lives. We need a little bit of both, one of the two simply is not enough and will hinder survival and thriving. Here is a true story from my teenage years. Jason (pseudonym used) was both my desk mate and neighbour. We were classmates in eighth and ninth grades. In terms of IQ, he was definitely one of the geniuses in my class, particularly in mathematics, where he always ranked as the top student. In addition to his intelligence, Jason was a star athlete and the champion title for swimming seemingly belonged to him schoolwide. Furthermore, he was brought up in an affluent family. His father was the CEO of the largest bookstore locally, where my mother worked as a department manager under his father's supervision. What I envied him the most was his good-looking appearance that attracted a lot of beautiful girls among my classmates. The mixed feelings, such as admiration and jealousy, lurked in my mind. Compared with him, I was a mediocre student by all means, no luck with either dating or being chased by a group of peers. ……
