It does not seem that Japanese families survive becausehusbands and wives love each other more than American couples, but rather because theyperhaps love each other less."I think love marriages are more fragile than arranged marriages," said Tomika Kusukawa,49, who married her high-school sweetheart and now runs a car repair shop with him. "In lovemarriages, when something happens or if the couple falls out of love, they split up."If there is a secret to the strength of the Japanese family, it consists of three ingredients: lowexpectations, patience, and shame.The advantage of marriages based on low expectations is that they have built-in shockabsorbers. If the couple discover that they have nothing in common, that they do not even likeeach other, then that is not so much a reason for divorce as it is par for the course.Even the discovery that one's spouse is having an affair is often not as traumatic in a Japanesemarriage as it is in the West. A little sexual infidelity on the part of a man （though not on the partof his wife） was traditionally tolerated, so long as he did not become so besotted as to pay hismistress more than he could afford.Tsuzuya Fukuyama, who runs a convenience store and will mark her 50th weddinganniversary this year, toasted her hands on an electric heater in the front of the store and declaredthat a woman would be wrong to get angry if her husband had an affair."It's never just one side that's at fault," Mrs. Fukuyama said sternly. "Maybe the husband hadan affair because his wife wasn't so hot herself. So she should look at her own faults."Mrs. Fukuyama's daughter came to her a few years ago, suspecting that her husband washaving an affair and asking what to do."I told her, 'Once you left this house, you can only come back if you divorce; if you're not prepared to get a divorce, then you'd better be patient,'" Mrs. Fukuyama recalled. 'And so shewas patient. And then she got pregnant and had a kid, and now they're close again."

编者：郭庆民 张卫平 （美国）王敏民 等 丛书主编：何其莘 （美国）杨孝明何其莘博士，北京外国语大学教授，博士生导师。1994年-2005年任北外副校长，现为中国人民大学外国语学院院长、清华大学双聘教授、广东外语外贸大学等29所院校的客座教授、教育部高校英语专业教学指导委员会主任、全国翻译硕士专业学位教育指导委员会副主任、全国英国文学学会会长、全国有突出贡献的中青年专家。主要成果包括，Listen to This，《新概念英语》，《文化透视英语教程》，《英国文艺复兴时期文学史》，《英国戏剧史》，《英国中古时期文学史》，《中国学者眼中的英国文学》等。杨孝明博士，教授。毕业于西安外国语大学，后获英国诺丁汉大学英语硕士学位、美国鲍陵格林州立大学英语博士学位。在俄亥俄州鲍陵格林州立大学和新泽西州海洋郡学院任教二十余年，教授英文写作、英美文学和语言学等课程，现为新泽西州海洋郡学院英语系终身教授。主要成果包括：The Rhetoric of Propaganda,Error of Creativity,A Hundred Flowers Blossoming, 《中国式英语错误分析》，《文学批评理论的运用》等。
